Waiver & Assumption of Risk
Participating in any Flandrien CC ride or event means you have read, understood, and agreed to everything below. Last updated August 2026.
1. Assumption of Risk
Road cycling is inherently dangerous. Group riding adds risks beyond those of riding alone. I understand and voluntarily accept these risks, which include but are not limited to: collisions with vehicles, other riders, pedestrians, animals, or fixed objects; falls and loss of control; road hazards, debris, potholes, railroad crossings, and adverse or changing weather and road surfaces; mechanical failure of my bicycle or equipment; the actions or negligence of other riders, drivers, or third parties; and the physical exertion of cycling, including the risk of heart attack, heat or cold injury, dehydration, serious injury, permanent disability, and death.
I understand that Flandrien CC rides are not “no-drop” rides, are not led by certified guides or coaches, and are not supported or supervised. I am responsible for my own safety, navigation, pacing, and decisions at all times.
2. My Responsibilities
By riding with the club, I agree that I will:
- Wear a properly fitted cycling helmet at all times while riding.
- Obey all traffic laws, signals, and the rules of the road, and ride predictably and courteously.
- Ride a bicycle that is in safe, sound working condition, and carry the means to be self-sufficient (at minimum a phone, spare tube, and the route).
- Assess my own fitness and ability honestly and ride within my limits; stop or turn back if conditions or my condition require it.
- Not ride while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or medication, and ride home safe, legal, and (after dark) properly lit.
- Take responsibility for my own navigation and for getting myself home if I am separated from the group.
3. Release of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, I release, waive, and discharge Flandrien CC, its founders, organizers, ride leaders, volunteers, and fellow participants (the “Released Parties”) from any and all claims, demands, or causes of action arising out of or related to my participation in any club ride or event, including claims based on the ordinary negligence of the Released Parties, and including any injury, death, or property damage I may suffer.
This release does not apply to gross negligence, recklessness, or intentional or willful misconduct, and does not waive any right that cannot be waived under Washington law.
4. No Duty to Rescue or Supervise
The Released Parties have no duty to supervise, assist, transport, or rescue me. Other riders are not responsible for waiting for me, leading me, or ensuring my safe return. Any assistance offered is voluntary and does not create a duty of care.
5. Medical & Emergency
I am solely responsible for knowing my own medical condition and for deciding whether I am fit to ride. I consent to receive emergency medical treatment if I am unable to consent at the time, and I understand I am responsible for the cost of any such treatment. I am responsible for my own health, travel, and accident insurance.
6. Minors
Riders must be 18 or older, or accompanied by and under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian who accepts these terms on the minor’s behalf.
7. Photography
Rides and events may be photographed or filmed. Photos may be used on our website and social channels to promote the club. If you do not want to appear, tell a ride organizer and we will do our best to honor it. See the Privacy Policy.
8. General
This waiver is governed by the laws of the State of Washington. If any part of it is found unenforceable, the remainder stays in effect. This is the entire agreement between me and the Released Parties regarding its subject matter and applies to all rides and events I attend, now and in the future.
